7 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Frame for Your Painting

1. Start with the artwork

First, think about the style of your painting and use that to shortlist a few frames that truly suit it. Then consider the style of the space where it will hang, and use that to choose the one.

Professionals advise: you can never go wrong with a simple, sleek, modern frame and a white mat.

2. Colors

Green tones pair well with gold, blue tones with silver. Will the framed painting hang near other artworks? If the painting contains even a touch of black, choose a simple black frame; if not, go with white. Still not sure? Ask us and we'll be happy to help.

3. Almost every painting looks better with a mat

A mat gives the painting breathing room. If the painting is small, it helps draw the viewer's attention to the right spot. It also conceals imperfect, uneven, or damaged edges.

4. Don't be afraid to go bold

Custom-made frames have the power to transform an artwork. Have a charcoal drawing? Try a gold frame with a bamboo-style ornament. A vivid photograph? A mirrored frame can take it to another level.

Among paintings, it's always nice to see a few abstract photographs, or candid holiday snapshots given by friends. These days even photos taken on a phone are of very high quality — don't be afraid to frame them!

6. Creating a gallery wall is easier than you think

If you're starting a gallery wall from scratch, pick one unifying element — a color, a size, a frame — and stick with it as you select all your pieces. If you have several bold paintings, choose white and silver wooden frames. Don't be afraid to mix different metal tones. Gold, silver, and champagne-colored frames hung side by side don't clash with one another.

7. How to hang it?

This is a big topic, but the most important thing is that people most often hang paintings too high. If you're hanging a painting above a sofa or another piece of furniture, leave 20–25 cm between it and the bottom of the painting. If it hangs alone on the wall with nothing else around it, the distance from the floor to the bottom of the painting should be about 1.5 m. If you're hanging several artworks or an entire gallery wall, think of the whole group of pieces in this respect as one large painting.
