Collection of the Week - The Art of Line
Graphic art is, above all, distinguished by the primacy of drawing. It is a play of lines, strokes, and black and white patches. Secondly, graphic works are usually monochrome, black and white, though colour can also be introduced.
Graphic works can be created with ink, pencil, pen, charcoal, or by printmaking - where the image is printed from an etched metal or wood plate. It is precisely works made with this latter technique that are usually produced in editions. This means the same work may be printed more than once, but such pieces are typically inscribed with the total number of copies and which number in the series you are acquiring.
When purchasing a graphic work, keep in mind that to hang it on the wall you will first need to have it framed. Framing offers the chance to experiment with mats and frames. Quite often, small graphic works framed with oversized mats look truly striking.
