“Never Look Away” (Never Look Away, 2018)
“Never Look Away” is a drama inspired by the life of the renowned artist Gerhard Richter.
The film spans thirty years of his life, from his childhood in Nazi Germany to his escape to the West and his involvement in a new contemporary art movement.
“Séraphine” (Séraphine, 2008)
“Séraphine” is a biographical drama about the self-taught painter Séraphine Louis, also known as Séraphine de Senlis.
The film tells the story of a middle-aged woman living in the small French town of Senlis. Her work is unexpectedly noticed by a collector who arrives in town and decides to make her famous.
“Modigliani” (Modigliani, 2004)
The film is set in early twentieth-century Paris. Amedeo Modigliani tries to prove the worth of his art, while his rival is the already-celebrated Pablo Picasso.
It is a romantic and tragic drama about one of the most outstanding artists of the twentieth century. The lead role was played by Andy Garcia.
“The Best Offer” (The Best Offer, 2013)
“The Best Offer” is a psychological thriller that takes viewers into the world of luxury auctions and antiques.
The main character, Virgil Oldman, is a wealthy, eccentric auction house director. He is hired by a young heiress, Claire, and their relationship gradually develops into a mysterious and tense story.
“Dorian Gray” (Dorian Gray, 2009)
“Dorian Gray” is a British fantasy drama based on Oscar Wilde's novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”
The film tells the story of a young man living in Victorian London whose youth is preserved by a mysterious portrait. Every sin he commits leaves its mark on the painting, while Dorian himself remains forever young.
“Pollock” (Pollock, 2000)
The film tells the story of Jackson Pollock, one of the most famous representatives of abstract expressionism.
It reveals the artist's journey from a struggling creator to a celebrated painter, his battle with alcoholism, and his dramatic personal life. The lead role was played by Ed Harris, who also directed the film.
“Frida” (Frida, 2002)
“Frida” tells the story of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her tragic yet inspiring life.
The film shows how, after a devastating accident, Frida discovers painting, endures a complicated relationship with Diego Rivera, and ultimately achieves recognition. The lead role was played by Salma Hayek.
“Girl with a Pearl Earring” (Girl with a Pearl Earring, 2003)
The film depicts the story behind the creation of Johannes Vermeer's famous painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”
Although the story is based on a novel, the film subtly conveys the everyday life of seventeenth-century painters and the atmosphere of the society of the time. The lead roles were played by Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson.
“Big Eyes” (Big Eyes, 2014)
“Big Eyes” tells the story of American painter Margaret Keane.
Her works achieved enormous success, but for a long time her husband was credited as their author. The film tells of the artist's struggle for her name, her authorship, and her freedom.
“Lust for Life” (Lust for Life, 1956)
The film is based on Irving Stone's novel and tells the story of Vincent van Gogh's life.
It shows how Van Gogh became a painter, how he reached the peak of his creativity, and how painting became a ruinous obsession for him. The lead role was played by Kirk Douglas.
