Virginijus Tamošiūnas
About the artist
I don't like very aestheticised, embellished art. Sometimes perfection is repulsive - I want to see, to feel the scars of reality, the disruption, the successes and failures, the positivity and the aggression, the uncertainty and the joy of discovery - all these words reflect our current environment, our current life. Art does not have to be fictional. It is important to be real - abstract and real...“
Virginijus Tamošiūnas is an artist whose body of work demonstrates the potential inherent in abstract painting. By consciously turning away from the conventions of realism, Tamošiūnas highlights the expressive force of color, line, and shape, allowing them to engage with the viewer on a direct level. In his practice, these components do not merely serve as techniques; they constitute the core and very being of the artwork itself.
Within Tamošiūnas’s creative process, the canvas becomes both a site of playful exploration and a boundary set for abstract emotions and ideas. The pictorial space functions as a structure, transforming impulses that might otherwise remain uncontrolled or fleeting into a disciplined visual language. The interplay between unrestrained imagination and the defined limits of the canvas stands at the heart of his artistic philosophy.
Often, Tamošiūnas delves into oppositions within his works, crafting both psychological tension and intervals of serenity. Bold, contrasting forms and vibrant colors engage in a visual dialogue that mirrors an array of emotional experiences—restlessness, calm, uncertainty, and peace. Abstraction enables each canvas to serve as an intense reflection on the intricacies of perception and emotion.
In the end, the abstract canvases of Virginijus Tamošiūnas prompt viewers to contemplate everyday existence—daily routines, emotional currents, doubts, and aspirations—all distilled to the pure elements of art. Rather than presenting clear-cut stories, these pieces evoke the layered and ambiguous nature of human life, opening themselves to individual contemplation and interpretation.
