Artist

"I was born in Kaunas in 1960, I studied at Kaunas J. Naujalis Secondary School of Art (now Kaunas Art Gymnasium), in 1978-84 I studied painting at the Vilnius Art Institute.

The first art lessons were in the family - the father studied painting in the post-war years, the mother studied textiles.

Painting was taught at the art school by the excellent pedagogue Algirdas Lukštas, at the Vilnius Art Institute by teachers Kostas Dereškevičius, Arvydas Šaltenis, Leopoldas Surgailis, prof. Vladas Karatajus.

After my studies, I depicted real forms in real space in my painted works. They were replaced by expressive abstraction in 1993. Since 2010, I have started a period of geometric abstraction.

Color geometry was motivated by the experiences of meetings with Arūnas Jonuškis and Modrius Tenisonas and the search for an easier and simpler way of expression. Arūnas introduced me to the color expressions of the meridians of the human body, Modris - the variation of field and grain through a spin in white centipede bands.

For me, two things are very important in painting: a strong color tension and a gap between the work and its title, which can turn into a gateway to the journey of the soul."
